RSE
Please see below our RSE policy and curriculum coverage for Y1-Y6 which has been updated in line with the government draft guidance relating to statutory RSE (Relationship and Sex Education) in all schools by September 2020. Attached below is also the range of books we use in school to support our RSE teaching. Relationships and Sex Education

We are very proud of the recognition of positive relationships within our school from our latest inspection.
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) has a vital role to play in contributing to the personal and social development of the children in our care. From when a child begins school, teachers play a very significant part in helping children understand themselves and how they relate to others. It is therefore firmly rooted in our framework for PSHE.
At St Oswald’s Church of England Primary School, we believe that RSE is an entitlement for all children, supporting them in managing their lives now and preparing them for an adult life in which they are able to manage relationships confidently. Our policy has been written by the curriculum lead and Head teacher in consultation with teaching staff and governors.
RSE is lifelong learning about physical, moral and emotional development. It is about the understanding of the importance of marriage for family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care. It is not about the promotion of sexual orientation or sexual activity – this would be inappropriate teaching. The objective of RSE is to help and support young people through their physical, emotional and moral development. A successful programme will help young people learn to respect themselves and others and move with confidence from childhood through adolescence into adulthood.
RSE will :
– be developmental and appropriate to the age and stage of the child;
– put forward factual knowledge and encourage the exploration of facts;
– examine opinions and concepts and encourage discussion;
– encourage awareness, respect and responsibility for oneself and others.
During this academic year we will be working towards achieving the Derbyshire BERT (Building Effective Relationships Together) award (see info flyer at the bottom of the page). We have lots to celebrate after achieving our Bronze BERT Award last year, we achieved our Silver Award in March and we have worked incredibly hard to achieve the Gold BERT Award.

In addition to this, we also have a range of books in school which cover themes of growing up, puberty and different types of relationships which are available to borrow to support you in having discussions with your child.
